We are thrilled to announce the publication of Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets by Rae Cumbie and Carrie Emerson! If you’ve been wondering why Fit for Art hasn’t released any new patterns in the past year, we can finally reveal that it’s because Rae and Carrie have been tied up with this BIG BIG project. The book was completed on a short timeline to capitalize on the current trendiness of patchwork and quilted jackets. Many thanks to the staff at Fox Chapel Publishing for shepherding us through this process.
A Comprehensive Resource
Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets is 184 glossy pages chock full of inspiration, illustrated instructions, and practical tips for success in sewing quilted and patchwork coats and jackets. The book includes:
- 10 fabulous projects, starting with a basic whole-cloth quilted jacket and progressing through patchwork, piecing, appliqué, collage, and reversible coats and vest.
- The projects are crafted from new fabrics, scrap collections, existing quilts and orphan quilt blocks.
- Two patterns for the Opus Jacket, one in adult sizes (XS – 3XL) and one in kid sizes (2-12), in multiple lengths with the option of a kimono style front band or shirt style with collar. Tiled patterns are included in the book as well as a QR code link to download the patterns for printing in full size or tiled formats.
- A detailed planning section, including design guidelines, material selection, notions and tools.
- General information about making the Opus quilted jacket or coat with step-by-step instructions and illustrations for preparing the patterns, making a mock-up, assembly and construction.
- All the techniques needed for quilting, assembling lining and finishing the coat or jacket, along with some fun extras on cuffs and pockets.

Congrats! Can you tell us a bit more about the Opus jacket and how it varies from the basic TR jacket?
Mary J.
Thanks Mary! The Opus jacket is very similar to the TRJ featuring the square armhole construction with slightly more ease, but it adds the shirt front style with a collar as an option to the kimono-style band. The projects could easily be adapted to the TRJ pattern.
Wonderful project and designs
What an exciting & timely project. Gorgeous designs. I just placed my advanced order.
This book looks amazing, just what I need, will it be available in the UK please?
That’s a great question Yvonne which I have passed on to our publisher. I’ll post the answer here when I hear back. I do know that the book can be ordered from Amazon and other major online retailers in the US, so perhaps also in the UK?
Thank you Carrie, I tried to order from Amazon UK as it was on their website to pre-order but they said they could not deliver to my address so they removed it from my order. Search Press in UK have a book, launching in December, with the same title by Rae Cumbie and Carrie Emerson but less pages and the front cover picture is different so I am a bit confused? Yvonne
Our publisher tells us that our book is available for pre-order from Amazon UK and, on publication, will be available through all UK online retailers. The official release date is Dec. 17. We’d appreciate it if you’d write a review on Amazon or other sites after receiving the book. Enjoy!
