Pre-cut Jelly Roll strips were assembled and cut in an exciting asymmetrical design, some of the strips running vertically and some horizontally, to create the fronts and back of this Front Band Style Opus coat. The sleeves, front band and side panels were cut from two coordinating “solids”. Star shaped appliques were added to the fronts, backs and sleeves after each section was quilted, but before assembling the coat. We thank our friends at SewBatik for this handsome group of cotton batiks, which are available in a wide range of colors.
The coat features a free-hanging china silk lining. The extra wide front band is secured with a collection of 5 vintage buttons, similar in color and style but not exactly matching. Find more details in the step-by-step instructions included with Project 2 in our book, Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets.
The jelly roll technique can be used to create a jacket with any set of pre-cut jelly rolls, coordinating fabrics, and themed appliques for very different looks. Look for a variety of jelly roll strips sold by quilting and fabric stores. For more jelly roll jacket inspiration, see Vines & Leaves.
