After months of focusing on sewing quilted jackets, we are shifting our attention to some fun seasonal sewing with knit fabrics. While Rae was stitching a new tee to wear under her quilted jacket, she thought there should be a knit sewing sidebar in the book about making great tops to wear under your favorite quilted jackets. Here’s the “sidebar” for you.

Make some basic knit tops
There had not been much knit stitching over the last year and a half, so my knit top collection was looking a bit tired. With the launch of our virtual knit class in 2024, we purchased some wonderful solid knits for kits to accompany the class. One of the colors was a soft terracotta, a great color for me and a great color match for my Assorted Patchwork Jacket. The fabric was pre-washed and became a basic Tabula Rasa Knit tee. It went with me last week to wear under that jacket for our book signing event in the Fox Chapel booth at H+H Americas. It felt great!

Knits travel so well
I also took a new Tabula Rasa Knit Tee, made with the angled collars from Wide Neckline Variations, on two recent trips. tay tuned for a post about finishing these collars as we celebrate knit stitching for the next few weeks.

Earlier in the spring, a box full of ice-dyed knits came from my Colorado friend Nick Coman, who taught me to ice dye in the fall of 2023. The fabric was a weighty rayon/cotton/spandex, and because it was essentially the same on both sides, it became a waterfall cardigan using the Twin Set Variations. It has been a very fun topper to put on when the days are chilly. It went into my suitcase this past weekend while visiting Charlottesville for my husband’s law school reunion. Stay tuned to see the tailored cardigan Carrie is planning with her pretty blue and lavender ice-dyed fabric.

Finally, I stitched up a new swing tee while writing a blog post about successful techniques for sewing the U-neckline on the basic Tabula Rasa Knit Tee & Tunic pattern. That too will be featured in the next few weeks as we celebrate knit sewing here on the blog, in social media and on Pinterest!

Sew some for yourself
While we were at the H + H Americas show last week we saw some very fun knit prints and ordered a few with the hopes of bringing you some fresh new bundled knits. Also, check out our solid knits, which are perfect under your jackets and vests, make great fitting mock-ups for the knit sewing class, and will also stand alone on a casual summer day.

We hope you have enjoyed this little knit sewing sidebar. Be sure to pick up your on-demand class so you can stitch with us at your convenience. Take a look at a few more links below the salutation if you want to read more about sewing knits with the Tabula Rasa Knit Tee & Tunic pattern and its variations.
