Slumbermouse Patchwork Jacket

This patchwork jacket features the same Tilda World Hibernation fabrics as found in the Sleepy Bird Wholecloth Jacket plus 2 additional prints from the series – a second floral and the adorable Slumbermouse. The patchwork fabric for the fronts, back, sleeves and collar was made with a traditional quilting process involving fabric strips sewn together, cross cut, and then sewn into a carefully planned grid. After cutting out each jacket section and stacking it with its batting and silk lining, the sections were quilted on a diagonal grid. The side panels are simply the Slumbermouse print.

This Shirt Collar Style Opus has a quilted-in lining and bound seams. It also features optional facings at the center front and turnback sleeve cuffs. It is closed with buttons and buttonholes. This jacket was made in a kids size 6, but the concept could be transferred to any size jacket (with a few calculations to work out the quantities needed). Find more details and step-by-step instructions for Project 9 in our book, Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets. The collection of five Tilda fabrics used in this jacket can be purchased as a Tilda Hibernation Bundle.

Consider different styles of patchwork seen in the Assorted Patchwork Opus Jacket, Quilted Circles jacket, and the Boro Vest.

  1. not enough contrast to the colors of the fabric, need to accent with piping or a wider edging to bring out the quilted pattern

    1. It is certainly true that the fabrics in this little jacket are quite similar, more like an impressionist painting. The fabrics would also look great with some trim or piping between each section, but that would increase the difficulty a good bit. If you try it that way, please send us a photo. We are loving seeing each individual design that is inspired by the book.
