Let the Pinterest Inspiration Begin

Pinterest is a modern way to keep an idea file or image notebook. If you are moving around online already, it is easy to get started. When Rae first met Pinterest, she was not sure how to use it in her clothing and crafting practices, but now it is a place she visits regularly. Today she will tell you how to let your Pinterest inspiration begin! So, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Pinterest is a place to find great garment sewing inspiration. Once I set up my free account and let the algorithm know what I was interested in, my feed continued to give me interesting images that I wanted to keep for consideration. The very best were saved to my inspiration board. Then, when I was planning a project that needed an interesting pocket, searching for pocket ideas was easy after I typed that into the search bar and hit enter. That was the beginning of my first detail specific board. The pockets I liked were pinned to the board by hitting the save button and choosing that board. If you do not have the board you need, hover on the pin, click on save and the “plus sign, Create a Board” and the bottom of the “save” pop up window will let you create a new board.

We also have some fun holiday crafting ideas saved to our Gifts for Sewists page, which can take you to free patterns and directions on the Fit for Art website.

100 Day Project inspired by Pinterest

If you are looking for garment sewing ideas, why not visit the Fit for Art Pinterest page and choose one of our inspo boards to begin your search. We have gathered lots of images with different ideas like Necklines, Hemlines, Sleeves and Cuffs, to adjust your core patterns with interesting details. We have also gathered some complex ideas that were chosen to inspire complicated projects like the Stacked Sheers top recently featured in this blog and in Threads Magazine. Another recent favorite is the 100 Day Project where I emulated an artist technique long admired and saved to my Inspo: Toile Fabric board. There are also boards for each of our core patterns with ideas for that pattern. I specifically love the Inspo: Dresses when considering a Carpe Diem design and Carrie likes to use Pinterest to inspire her Eureka! Pants designs like her recent post on the culottes she made last summer.

We have several more blog posts that show you how we have used Pinterest to inspire our sewing. If you visit our website and then click on the blog tab, you will see a search bar on the right-hand side. Type in Inspired by Pinterest, and hit enter. All the posts with that line in them will populate the page, then read the ones that interest you most.

Next week I will introduce you to a fun new shirt created with SewBatik Corduroy and an idea from my Pinterest Inspo: Pockets page. Diane of SewBatik and I will be talking about it on her YouTube Channel next week too, so stay tuned for more details.

Working with our Core Wardrobe Patterns is a great way to assure a good fit with each new garment you create; adding personalized design details that reflect your personality make each project new even though you are repeating the same pattern. I believe that one of the first blogs I wrote on this subject was in 2015 about a new knit top I was experimenting with. Inspired Knits for Fall is the post and it talks about my process. Can you see how making this top led to our next knit variation pattern, Clever Crossing Variations?

Keep these ideas in your mind as you enter the new year and need to ignite your sewing mojo. Choose a core Fit for Art Pattern and a new design detail, then, let the Pinterest inspiration begin!

Happy Sewing, RAE
