In recent memory we were briefly a world unified by our love for Dolly Parton. At Fit for Art we were delighted that so many people across a wide variety of professions and regions stopped to remember this talented performer and generous humanitarian.

We included Dolly in a blog not long ago, Terrific Reads about Style Icons, when we reviewed her book, My Life in Rhinestones, a colorful memoir of her career and performance clothing. Garment sewing, costumes, fitting, creative details and a love of fabric unifies the readers of this blog and this week we will take a FFA break for Rae to bring you two Dolly inspired moments.

Upon revisiting the Dolly book I was not surprised to discover that after 9/11, Dolly recorded a patriotic album. For the launch of each album, she commissioned thematic clothing to wear for the album’s promotion. There were such fun images of a patriotic Dolly it seemed right to share them this week as the USA is in election season. It is our way of encouraging you to go to the poles, if you have not already voted, and vote for the candidate of your choice.

Now back to Dolly memories. In 2013 the ASDP conference was held in Nashville, home of Dolly and Country Music. Through a local connection, a collection of Dolly’s clothes were lent to ASDP for a private exhibit during the Welcome Reception.

But, mannequins had to be altered so the clothes would actually fit and be shown to their best advantage. Our good friend Edye volunteered to help. As a Dolly fan, she was totally in her element.

In an empty conference room, the tiny dress forms were prepared. It wasn’t work, but a party to celebrate a symbol of the American dream. Enjoy these photos of the covering and stuffing of each form for the evening’s reception.

The audience was beyond appreciative. As tailors, dressmakers and designers, the beauty of each garment hanging on a tailor made dress form was inspiring.
When the world seems harsh, channel your inner Dolly and create love and beauty wherever you go. Don’t forget to go to the voting booth if you have not done so already.
Have an inspiring week, RAE
