The Gift of Learning

This weekend in America we will celebrate Mother’s day, the day we honor those who have guided and sustained us through the years, perhaps decades.  Not only our mothers, but women who have supported us and who, if you are reading this blog, probably taught you how to sew.  Consider the gift of learning as a way to pay tribute to these special guides.

At Fit for Art, everything we do is designed to keep you learning new ideas and new techniques; to expand your vision of the many ways you can create for yourself and others.  And by the way, we learn from you as well; when you take us down a new path or imagine a new design, we are encouraged to go with you!

Knowing that mothers and mother figures of all ages need to be encouraged along the way, we have bundled our Tabula Rasa Jacket pattern and our Tabby Jacket pattern together at big savings to encourage intergenerational sewing and learning this mother’s day.  Order the Jacket Bundle today for a Mother’s Day gift.

All of our resources – blog post archive, books, pattern instructions, photo gallery, and more – provide inspiration and supporting info and a link to us so you can sew successfully!  This is our abiding philosophy because we appreciate how important teaching was along our sewing journeys.  Rae adds that as a teen hungry to learn more about sewing, she learned from her mom, her mom’s sewing friends, and from the beautifully written directions in the Vogue Patterns she preferred.

Because learners have many different ways of absorbing information, we have added virtual learning opportunities to our resources. For someone you cherish, gift a Virtual Course for either (or both) the Tabula Rasa Jacket and Tabula Rasa Knit Tee & Tunic.  Our on-demand virtual classes are substantially discounted for Mother’s Day (and through June) for summer learning. Follow this link to purchase a virtual course as a gift.

On demand learning is a great way to learn or revisit the sewing process, learn the latest techniques and discover the best resources, so everyone is sewing successfully with Fit for Art.  It’s also a great way to share learning time with a friend who lives far from you! You can take a course simultaneously and visit by phone or on a virtual meet up to compare notes and encourage each other.

If you live in the Baltimore/Washington region, join us for a basic Tabula Rasa Jacket Workshop at Springwater Designs, a quilting store in Columbia MD, on June 7 and 21.  For sewing inspiration, join us there on Saturday, May 31 at 1PM for a trunk show and introduction to our patterns. Please register for these events in advance with Spring Water Designs by following the highlighted links.

Rae has been working on an embroidery/applique project lately as a 100-day project.  She says regularly that she has rediscovered the tenacity it takes to work in a medium that is not her expertise, on a daily basis.   Some of this empowerment came from the fact that she has been following an embroidery master, Mary Corbet’s Needle’n Thread newsletter. Reading her online missives has really inspired Rae to try something a bit different. While her jacket project is not perfect, she has learned a good bit and is very happy with the progress.  She promises to tell you more when it is all done. while stitching every night, she is reminded of a little rhyme one of our France Retreat participants shared with our group in 2019 while boro stitching in the studio:

“I cannot count my day complete till needle, thread and fabric meet.”

Perhaps Rae will work this quote into the design somewhere on her evolving jean jacket.  Perhaps you will join us this year, or a future year in the French Countryside or at a 3 day retreat in the states.  Perhaps you will give the gift of learning to yourself, a friend, mother figure or a child you know.  Fit for Art would love to have you join us on our learning adventures!

Happy Sewing and Learning,  Carrie and Rae
