Quilted Jacket Fun with Sewing Friends

Over the next couple of weeks, Fit for Art has the pleasure of inviting you to join us for quilted jacket fun with sewing friends that will inspire you as a stitcher and quilted jacket maker. Carrie and Rae are lucky to have friends in the sewing community who have been busy stitching up projects inspired by our book Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets and are ready to share their progress! So put these free events on your calendar and please share the links with your sewing and quilting friends.

Sewing with TomKat Stitchery

On Friday, January 31, Whitney and Jenni of TomKat Stitchery will post an hour-long video about the fun they had creating quilted jackets for themselves and for some young friends with guidance from our book, Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets. We can’t wait to see and hear more about their quilted jacket adventure. Follow this link to view TomKat’s video on Friday morning (1/31/25), or anytime thereafter, to be inspired by their great jackets and enthusiastic approach to garment sewing.

TomKat Kids Jackets made with the Opus Pattern

We first met Whitney Luckenbill, the creative force and enthusiastic sewing instructor behind TomKat Stitchery, through the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals many years ago. Since then, she has developed her sewing skills into a popular YouTube channel and digital sewing instruction website. If you are not already familiar with TomKat Stitchery, you can learn more on its website and YouTube channel and follow Whitney on Instagram and Facebook.

Fun Projects with the Decorating Diva

This coming weekend, check into Pam Damour’s 12th annual webathon while Rae and Carrie present two fun sessions. These zoom links will get you into any of the webathon sessions which run from 12 noon to 12 midnight on Friday, January 31 and from 6AM to 6PM on Saturday, February 1. Pam’s guests will discuss bag making, garment making, embellishing, tools to try, serging tips, and much more. Please note that these two links, one for each day, will work only while the webathon is live.

At 10AM on Saturday Feb. 1, Carrie and Rae will present Sewing with Kids. Our Tabby Jacket and Opus Coat patterns are available in kid’s sizes (Opus is included in Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets). The Tabby Jacket pattern offers excellent instructions for kids who read and can navigate a sewing machine to make their own unlined jackets with the guidance of a grown-up. We will show several fun kid-sized jacket samples and share tips for grown-ups assisting young garment sewers during this 50-minute learning opportunity.

Coordinating garments are fun to make.

At 1PM Rae and Carrie will be back on the webathon with a Trunk Show and conversation about the 10 quilted jackets included in our new book Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets. Be sure to join in the fun and begin imagining your own jacket project. Quilted jackets are all the rage this year, so add one to your to-do list!

Watch all 24 hours of Pam’s event by following the link. If you want to learn with Pam all year, take out a subscription for her video series. That subscription will let you watch recordings of all the webathon hours and each of her monthly videos offered February to December.

Sew Daily and Quilting Daily on Quilted Jacket Journeys

Our final winter event is live from 1-3 PM eastern time on Friday, February 7 with Sew Daily and Quilting Daily, online sewing educators and subscription service. You may remember that Sew Daily originated as Sew News Magazine. Rae wrote for Sew News Magazine for over 20 years, mostly sharing her fitting knowledge in a weekly column. She has many hours of instruction available in the video archive of Sew Daily, too.

We were delighted when Sew Daily and their effervescent leader Meg Healy suggested a free live event to introduce Sewing Quilted Patchwork Jackets to the Sew Daily and Quilting Daily communities. Click through to read about Carrie and Rae’s journey to quilted jacket excellence on both Sew Daily and Quilting Daily’s public pages.

Meg has made this adorable quilted jacket for her young son! Don’t you love the clever use of fleece as the lining for a kids jacket! Follow Meg on Instagram for Sew Daily and Quilting Daily where she’ll be talking this week about the quilted jacket she made.

Meg’s adorable jacket

The 2-hour LIVE event is free, but you must register in advance to participate! Join Rae, Carrie, Meg and Sadie to talk about getting started on a quilted jacket, design ideas that are inspired by the 10 projects in the book, a look at fit tips for the Opus pattern included in the book, and a Q & A with Rae and Carrie. Registration includes a free tote bag pattern which we think is perfect for testing out quilted jacket ideas. There will also be a book give away during the afternoon event.

We hope you will join us for one or all of these excellent opportunities to celebrate sewing with some of our favorite sewing friends.
