Please join Fit for Art Patterns at the Bookmaking with Fabric and Paper retreat! Spend August 16-23, 2024 with Rae Cumbie and guest instructors Aline Cauvin and Dayle Doroshaw at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France, to explore the countryside and a variety of fabric bookmaking techniques with vinatage fabrics and papers. The event fee includes:
- Mornings spent in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home. We will paint, stitch, glue, collage and piece a variety of books, book covers, and journals to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Sewing machines and most craft materials are provided. You will receive more information in the weeks leading up to the retreat.
- Afternoons spent exploring the surrounding countryside including the flower fields, regional markets, tree lined thoroughfares, small villages and towns. Our tour guide will be Anna Cumbie, Rae’s bilingual daughter who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher. Daily field trips will include visits to such places as the Ravel Market and fabric store, an antique fabric dealer, the Soreze Tapestry Museum, Montolieu, the village of books, and more.
- Room and Board at La Cascade Artists Retreat. The simple accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. Most meals, including breakfast lunch and dinner, will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream. Because this retreat is held in a charming but very old house in France, the only access to the 2d floor bedroom accommodations and 3d floor studio are by stairs. Please take note that there is no air conditioning other than the natural air and cool stream running along side the premises; summer in Southern France can be quite warm.
- We will meet at the Toulouse, France airport on August 16 and travel together to the retreat center in the village of Durfort. You will be returned to the Toulouse airport on August 23. Rental cars are provided for group travel around the countryside and on field trips.
Not included: your airfare to and from Toulouse, travel insurance (required), an occasional restaurant meal, and personal purchases. (Leave room in your luggage for fabulous fabric and other souvenirs!)
The total cost of the retreat is $3150. By placing this registration item in your cart, you will be charged a non-refundable deposit of $650 at checkout. Fit for Art Patterns will invoice you directly for the balance which may be paid in two installments of $1,250 due by April 1 and an additional $1,250 due by June 1, 2024 (or in one payment of $2,500 by April 1). Due to limited space, class size will be limited to 9.
Event Cancellation Policy: Retreat deposits are non-refundable. If the registrant cancels after April 15, the balance that has been paid will be refunded only if Fit for Art is able to fill the vacancy. If the event is cancelled due to circumstances beyond the control of Fit for Art Patterns, such as the host facility being closed or France closing its borders, we will offer the attendee the option to credit the full amount paid toward a future Fit For Art event or to receive a refund less a 10% service fee.
After the event fills, we will keep a wait list in the event of cancellations; please contact us or send an email to email@example.com to be placed on the wait list. Thank you!
