On day one\, Rae and Carrie will help you identify the correct jacket size using sizing shells\, adjust your pattern with your personal fit adjustments\, cut\, mark\, and sew your mock-up. The first session will close with a look at possible fabrics students brought for a wearable mock-up. On day two\, students will begin designing and making their own wearable jacket\, see and learn about supports and finishes that will make your jackets beautiful and functional for years. Finally\, instructors will touch on the wide range of possibilities for future mixed fiber jackets\, quilted jackets\, drapey tops and shirts.

DESCRIPTION:La Cascade\, Durfort France \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Rae* and her artistic friends Aline Cauvin** and Dayle Doroshow*** for a restful and fanciful week of making in the village of Durfort\, France. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe La Cascade studio will be filled with vintage papers\, trims\, lace and fabulous fabric for creating unique books to give or to keep — for recording thoughts\, travel highlights\, words to live by\, or whatever strikes your fancy. The teaching team will provide gentle guidance in how to make and organize pages in a variety of paper and fabric based constructions. Of course there will be paints and pens\, needles and threads and all manner of tools for creating fabric books to store your explorations of new and favorite techniques or tools. Outings in the surrounding countryside will inspire each day’s activities. \n\n\n\n\nAline’s treasure trove of vintage fabrics and papers.\n\n\n\nPeaches were lovely at the Revel market \n\n\n\n\nOur home away from home is a medieval townhouse in a copper making village nestled in the shadow of the Black Mountains.  Life here has long been grounded in creativity.  The cool stream that falls down the mountain and cascades beside the back patio of La Cascade sets the tone for interesting days and restful nights. Our host\, Nese\, will keep us nourished with lovely local food from the summer’s bounty.  The cozy atmosphere is magical and inspirational discoveries are around every corner.   \n\n\n\n\nDinner on the Patio\n\n\n\nOur host and chef\, Nese.\n\n\n\n\nPlease take note that this retreat is held in a charming but very old house in France; the only access to the 2d floor bedroom accommodations and 3d floor studio is by stairs. There is no air conditioning other than the natural air and cool stream running along side the premises; summer in Southern France can be quite warm. \n\n\n\nIncluded accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. She continued with the study of Book Arts at California Crafts College and San Francisco Center for the Book. She studied jewelry with mentors Gwen Gibson and Tory Hughes and her large textile wall hangings incorporate the jewelry she makes.  Her work is featured in over eighteen publications. DESCRIPTION:Our lane in Durfort\n\n\n\nFit for Art Patterns invites you to refresh your creative spirit at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort\, a medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of southern France. Join Rae Cumbie and guest instructor Barbie McCormick for a week of stitching\, exploring and sharing ideas with like-minded makers.  Registration will begin on Wednesday October 21 at noon eastern time. \n\n\n\n\nThe sunflowers welcome you\n\n\n\nRae and Barbie welcome you\n\n\n\n\nThis year\, we’ll be chasing Coco—exploring the legendary sewing techniques Coco Chanel developed for her soft yet sophisticated jackets more than a century ago. In the studio\, we’ll work with classic Chanel-inspired materials such as boucle and silk to create a vest and/or bag. Rae and Barbie will guide you through the process\, from personalizing Fit for Art’s Tabula Rasa Jacket pattern and selecting materials to cutting\, stitching and embellishing your project. \n\n\n\n\nShopping at Aline’s magical Antique Textile and Paper Attalier\n\n\n\nShopping at Aline’s magical Antique Textile and Paper Attalier\n\n\n\n\nOur days will be divided between creative time in the cozy third-floor studio of our 17th-century home and excursions around the region. We’ll visit neighboring Revel with its famous regional market and explore the tree-lined streets\, flower fields\, peaceful vistas\, small villages and historic landmarks in the surrounding countryside . \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial outings connected to our Coco theme will include a visit to a textile museum with exhibits on the making of boucle threads and fabrics\, plus shopping at a fine fabric store known for its beautiful selection of boucle and silk. Pants that Fit fitting shells. Bring your own sewing machine\, serger if desired\, basic sewing and cutting tools\, patterns\, fabric\, thread and notions for your projects. We will also have Fit for Art’s patterns\, tools\, interfacing\, mock-up fabric\, and select fashion fabrics available for purchase. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nMaritime Conference Center in Linthicum Maryland (right by the Baltimore Washington International Airport). This lovely facility is easily accessible from the airport\, train\, light rail or MARC.  Rooms are available for $179 per night for a single or $241 for a double\, plus state and local taxes.
