DESCRIPTION:Fit for Art Patterns invites you to refresh your creative spirit at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort\, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France. The one-week program is lead by textile artists and Fit for Art owners Rae Cumbie* and Carrie Emerson.** Together we will explore the local countryside and a variety of fabric embellishing and surface design techniques. \n\n\n\n\nWelcome to Durfort \n\n\n\nThe magic fountain\n\n\n\n\nOur Activities\n\n\n\nOur days will be split between artistic pursuits in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home and traveling around the region to experience life in southern France.  \n\n\n\nExplorations of neighboring Revel and the surrounding countryside will include historic sites and regional markets\, tree lined thoroughfares\, flower fields\, peaceful vistas\, and small villages. Rae’s bilingual daughter\, Anna\, who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher\, will join us from time to time to enrich our French adventure. \n\n\n\n\nShopping at the Revel market\n\n\n\nEnjoying a village festival\n\n\n\nTouring the canal works\n\n\n\nTaking in the grand view\n\n\n\n\nTextile-related activities will include touring a museum with contemporary tapestries\, visits with local artisans and collectors\, a day pastel dyeing with an expert in the field\, and time to shop for fabric. \n\n\n\n\nDenise working a dye vat\n\n\n\nPastel dyed lace\n\n\n\nVisiting antique fabric and paper dealer\n\n\n\n\nIn the studio\, we will paint\, stitch\, collage and piece a variety of small fabric samples to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Stitchers of all skill levels and interests are welcome. We’ll find visual inspiration for our creative work in the ironwork details\, copper works\, blue pastel fabrics and notions\, bountiful outdoor markets and fields\, museum exhibits\, and shops. \n\n\n\n\nCollage in progress\n\n\n\nFabric painting in progress\n\n\n\nScrap lace in progress\n\n\n\nPlaying in the studio\n\n\n\n\nAs we move through the week’s creative experiences and beautiful adventures\, your work in the studio will come to life. You will be encouraged to move your samples forward with several options depending on your interest and abilities: \n\n\n\n\nPlan and craft samples to be included in an embellished garment.\n\n\n\nEmbellish a garment brought from home for this purpose.\n\n\n\nIncorporate your samples into a useful memento such as a book cover\, sleep mask or tool roll.\n\n\n\nCraft the samples into a wall hanging\, table runner or  tote bag.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Accommodations\n\n\n\nMeals will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream. \n\n\n\n\nNese\, hostess and chef\n\n\n\nDinner on the terrace\n\n\n\n\nOur home away from home\n\n\n\nIncluded accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. A limited number of single rooms are available for an additional fee of $800. We’ll travel in shared rental cars from the Toulouse airport to La Cascade and environs. \n\n\n\nPlease take note that this retreat is held in a charming but very old house in France; the only access to the 2nd floor bedroom accommodations and 3nd floor studio is by stairs. There is no air conditioning other than the natural air and cool stream running along side the premises; summer in Southern France can be quite warm. \n\n\n\nDetails and Fine Print\n\n\n\nThe retreat fee of $3\,250 includes most materials\, room\, board\, field trips and priceless experiences. Class size is limited to 9. A non-refundable registration fee of $750 is required to hold your space; the balance is due in two additional payments. This may include assistance with: \n\n\n\n\nFitting Fit for Art’s patterns\, beginning from our fit samples or from the mock-up or garment you bring with you;\n\n\n\nMaking pattern adjustments for fit;\n\n\n\nModifying a Fit for Art dress\, jacket\, knit\, or pants pattern for Variations or Details;\n\n\n\nPlanning a coordinated travel or everyday wardrobe;\n\n\n\nWorking with fabric in your stash\, such as developing a mixed fiber garment;\n\n\n\nPlanning and making a more complex wearable art garment;\n\n\n\nTrying a project featured in a Sew! Let’s Get Dressed blog post;\n\n\n\nOr whatever Fit for Art sewing project you are dreaming about!\n\n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\nThe fee is $625 for the 3-day retreat. The fee includes complimentary parking\, lunch\, and ample snacks and beverages each day. Fit for Art will provide a sewing table for each participant (which can be left set up day-to-day) plus: cutting tables\, ironing stations\, pattern paper\, pattern drafting tools\, and the Tabula Rasa Jacket and Eureka! Pants that Fit fitting shells. Bring your own sewing machine\, serger if desired\, basic sewing and cutting tools\, patterns\, fabric\, thread and notions for your projects. We will also have Fit for Art’s patterns\, tools\, interfacing\, mock-up fabric\, and select fashion fabrics available for purchase. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nMaritime Conference Center in Linthicum Maryland (right by the Baltimore Washington International Airport). This lovely facility is easily accessible from the airport\, train\, light rail or MARC.  Rooms are available for $172 per night for a single or $217 for a double\, plus state and local taxes. Room rate includes both breakfast and dinner in the conference center dining room and access to recreational facilities on the grounds.  To make an overnight reservation\, call Hotel Reservations at 410-859-5700 and identify yourself with the Fit for Art Patterns Retreat Spring 2025 (Booking #8542). SUMMARY:Enchanting France - Embellishing Fabric 2024
DESCRIPTION:Spend a week in July with Rae Cumbie* and Carrie Emerson** of Fit for Art Patterns at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort\, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France\, exploring the countryside and a variety of fabric embellishing and surface design techniques. \n\n\n\nWelcome to La Cascade!\n\n\n\nThe mornings will be spent in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home. We will paint\, stitch\, collage and piece a variety of small fabric samples to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Stitchers of all skill levels and interests are welcome. \n\n\n\nCreatives at work in the  studio.\n\n\n\nAfternoons will be spent exploring the surrounding countryside including the flower fields\, regional markets\, tree lined thoroughfares\, and small villages. Our tour guide will be Anna Cumbie\, Rae’s bilingual daughter who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher.  She will assist us in masterfully managing our new surroundings and will lead us to some fun spots for an authentic French Adventure. \n\n\n\nAnna probing a pastel dye vat.\n\n\n\nLocal textile activities will include touring a museum with contemporary tapestries\, visits with local artisans and collectors\, a day pastel dyeing with an expert in the field\, and time to shop at a local fabric store. \n\n\n\n\nLearning about pastel dyeing from Denise.\n\n\n\nAnd the fruits of our labors!\n\n\n\n\nWe will find inspiration in the ironwork details\, copper works\, blue pastel fabrics and notions\, bountiful outdoor markets\, museum exhibits\, and fabric and trim stores in neighboring Revel and environs. \n\n\n\n\nFabric shopping in Revel\n\n\n\nPeaches were lovely at the Revel market \n\n\n\nTouring the Dom Robert museum.\n\n\n\n\nAs we move through the week’s creative experiences and beautiful adventures\, your work in the studio will come to life. You will be encouraged to move your samples forward with several options depending on your interest and abilities: \n\n\n\n\nScrap lace in progress.\n\n\n\nMemories of La Cascade Tote Bag.\n\n\n\nFabric collage memento.\n\n\n\n\n\nCombine your samples into an inspired technique book or book cover.\n\n\n\nCreate a functional tote that will include your work.\n\n\n\nCraft the samples into a wall hanging or table runner.\n\n\n\nPlan and craft samples to be included in an embellished garment.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMeals will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream. \n\n\n\n\nOur host and chef\, Nese.\n\n\n\nTable set for dinner on the patio.\n\n\n\n\nIncluded accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. SUMMARY:Sew Successfully Retreat - Fall 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join Rae and Carrie for 3 days of dedicated sewing at this retreat for beginner to advanced sewists.  Let us inspire your creativity on a project or help you perfect that fit while working in a community of fellow sewists in a beautiful space.  We will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily to provide expert guidance and individualized help toward success on your chosen sewing projects. This may include assistance with: \n\n\n\n\nFitting Fit for Art’s patterns\, beginning from our fit samples or from the mock-up or garment you bring with you;\n\n\n\nMaking pattern adjustments for fit;\n\n\n\nModifying a Fit for Art jacket\, knit\, dress or pants pattern for Variations or Details;\n\n\n\nPlanning a coordinated travel or everyday wardrobe;\n\n\n\nWorking with fabric in your stash\, such as developing a mixed fiber garment;\n\n\n\nPlanning and making a more complex wearable art garment;\n\n\n\nTrying a project featured in a Sew! Let’s Get Dressed blog post;\n\n\n\nOr whatever Fit for Art sewing project you are dreaming about!\n\n\n\n\nCost\n\n\n\nThe fee is $575 for the 3-day retreat. The fee includes parking\, lunch\, and ample snacks and beverages each day. Fit for Art will provide a sewing table for each participant (which can be left set up day-to-day) plus: cutting tables\, ironing stations\, pattern paper\, pattern drafting tools\, and the Tabula Rasa Jacket and Eureka! Pants that Fit fitting shells. Bring your own sewing machine\, serger if desired\, basic sewing and cutting tools\, patterns\, fabric\, thread and notions for your projects. We will also have Fit for Art’s patterns\, tools\, interfacing\, notions\, mock-up fabric\, and select fashion fabrics available for purchase. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nMaritime Conference Center in Linthicum Maryland (right by the Baltimore Washington International Airport). This lovely facility is easily accessible from the airport\, train\, light rail or MARC.  Rooms will be available at the rate of approximately $165 per night for a single or $210 for a double\, plus state and local taxes. SUMMARY:The Art of the Custom Tee
DESCRIPTION:Fit for Art Patterns joins Nick Coman and Dragonfly Creative to offer a 3-day dyeing and sewing workshop in Ridgway\, Colorado.  Create a dressy custom tunic or tee from fabric that you dye yourself while learning fitting and sewing tricks from Rae and Nick for handling knits. All in the shadows of the majestic San Juan mountains in beautiful Southwest Colorado. \n\n\n\nWe will be ice dyeing knit rayon and making the gorgeous Tabula Rasa Knit Tee or Tunic. Under Nick’s expert guidance\, we will hand dye your fabric. Then Rae will guide you in fitting and constructing your choice of a gorgeous tunic or tee with customizable neck\, sleeve\, and hem\, out of your hand dyed fabric. \n\n\n\nWhen: Fri/Sat/Sun October 27-29\, 2023 from 9am – 4pm daily with an hour for lunch \n\n\n\nRegistration Cost: $650 \n\n\n\n\nAll materials and supplies are provided\, including sewing machines (if you don’t want to bring your own).\n\n\n\nBreakfast and lunch will be provided daily\n\n\n\nDinner will be served on the first night at Nick’s home.\n\n\n\nDinner the last night is included at a location to be determined. SUMMARY:Enchanting France - Embellishing Fabric
DESCRIPTION:Spend August 2-9\, 2023 with Rae Cumbie* and Carrie Emerson** of Fit for Art Patterns at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort\, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France\, to explore the countryside and a variety of fabric embellishing and surface design techniques. \n\n\n\nWelcome to La Cascade!\n\n\n\nThe mornings will be spent in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home. We will paint\, stitch\, collage and piece a variety of small fabric samples to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Stitchers of all skill levels and interests are welcome. \n\n\n\n\nRae presents fabric painting\n\n\n\nGetting started in the studio.\n\n\n\n\nAfternoons will be spent exploring the surrounding countryside including the flower fields\, regional markets\, tree lined thoroughfares\, small villages and cathedral towns.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur tour guide will be Anna Cumbie\, Rae’s bilingual daughter who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher. She will assist us in masterfully managing our new surroundings and will lead us to some fun haunts for an authentic French Adventure. \n\n\n\nAnna probing the pastel vat with Carrie\n\n\n\nPastel Dying\n\n\n\nWe will find inspiration in the ironwork details\, copper works\, blue pastel fabrics and notions\, bountiful outdoor markets\, museum exhibits\, and fabric and trim stores in neighboring Revel. \n\n\n\nAs we move through the week’s creative experiences and beautiful adventures\, your work in the studio will come to life. You will be encouraged to move your samples forward with several options depending on your interest and abilities: \n\n\n\n\nA book cover in progress.\n\n\n\nMemories of La Cascade Tote Bag.\n\n\n\nSome of the fabric postcards.\n\n\n\n\n\nCombine your samples into an inspired technique book\,\n\n\n\nCreate a functional tote that will include your work\,\n\n\n\nCraft the samples into a wall hanging or table runner\,\n\n\n\nPlan and craft samples to be included in an embellished garment.\n\n\n\n\nMeals will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream. \n\n\n\nDinner on the terrace\n\n\n\nIncluded accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. A limited number of single rooms are available for an additional fee of $800.  We’ll travel in shared rental cars from the Toulouse airport to La Cascade and environs. \n\n\n\nAlbi – a day trip \n\n\n\nThe retreat fee of $2950 includes most materials\, room\, board\, field trips and priceless experiences.  Class size is limited to 9. The nonrefundable registration fee is $550.
