DESCRIPTION:Join us for 2 to 5 days of sewing and designing fun with fellow sewists at a summer’s end sewing retreat!  Rae and Carrie are available all day long to provide individualized help to sew successfully on your choice of sewing projects. This may include assistance with: \n\n• Fitting a Fit for Art pattern beginning from our fit samples or from the mock-up or garment you bring with you.\n• Making pattern adjustments for fit.\n• Modifying a Fit for Art jacket\, knit or pants pattern for Variations or Details such as the new Glamour Details for pants or the Jean Jacket Variations\n• Planning a coordinated travel or everyday wardrobe.\n• Working with fabric in your stash\, such as developing a mixed fiber garment.\n• Planning and making a more complex wearable art garment.\n• Trying a project featured in a Sew! Let’s Get Dressed blog post.\n• Or whatever sewing project you are dreaming about! \nFee: $110 per day for 2 or 3 days\, $100 per day for 4 or 5 days.  Non-refundable deposit of $110 due with registration\, balance due August 15\, 2019.  Choose your days\, August 20 – 24\, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. \nFee includes lunch\, beverages and a sewing table for each participant (which can be left set up day-to-day). SUMMARY:Enchanting France - Embellishing Fabric
DESCRIPTION:Spend July 5-12\, 2019 with Rae Cumbie* and Fit for Art Patterns at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort\, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France to explore the countryside and a variety of fabric embellishing and surface design techniques. \nThe mornings will be spent in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home.  We will paint\, stitch\, collage\, and piece a variety of small fabric samples to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Stitchers of all skill levels and interests are welcome. \nThe studio before the work began.\nAfternoons will be spent exploring the surrounding countryside including the flower fields\, regional markets\, tree lined thoroughfares\, small villages and cathedral towns. Our tour guide will be Anna Cumbie\, Rae’s bilingual daughter who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher. \nOur translator Anna with Rae.\nShe will assist us in masterfully managing our new surroundings and will lead us to some fun haunts for an authentic French Adventure. \nThe ceiling of the Albi Cathedral\nWe will find inspiration in the ironwork details\, copper works\, blue pastel fabrics and notions\, bountiful outdoor markets\, museum exhibits\, and fabric and trim stores in neighboring Revel. \nThe lovely fabric store in Revel.\nAs we move through the week’s creative experiences and beautiful adventures\, your work in the studio will come to life.  You will be encouraged to move your samples forward with several options depending on your interest and abilities: \nTechnique samples!\n\nCombine your samples into an inspired technique book\,\nCreate a functional tote that will include your work\,\nCraft the samples into a wall hanging or table runner\,\nPlan and craft samples to be included in an embellished garment.\nMixed Embellishments Coat.\n\n  \nMeals will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream. \nThe terrace and stream\, so refreshing.\nIncluded accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. Single rooms and an apartment are available for an additional fee. We’ll travel in shared rental cars from the Toulouse airport to La Cascade and environs. \nThe $2300 cost include most materials\, room\, board and priceless experiences.  Not included is your airfare to and from Toulouse\, Travel insurance (required)\, shared rental car costs\, and an occasional restaurant meal\, personal purchase or museum entrance. Let’s Get Dressed blog post;\nOr whatever sewing project you are dreaming about!\n\nSpecial Project!  Make a Painted Knit Tabula Rasa Top.  You may have seen recent blog posts about our experiments with painting knit fabrics for a Tabula Rasa Tee or Tunic.  We are loving this new liquid paint on knit fabrics!  So you can enjoy it too\, we will set up a painting center for your experiments and\, if you’d like\, to create your own Painted Knit TRK top. \nThe fee is $140 per day for 2 to 4 days and $130 per day for all 5 days.  The fee includes complimentary parking\, a buffet lunch with lots of choices\, and ample snacks and beverages each day.  Fit for Art will provide a sewing table for each participant (which can be left set up day-to-day) plus: cutting tables\, ironing stations\, serger\, pattern paper\, pattern drafting tools\, and the Tabula Rasa Jacket and Eureka! Pants that Fit fitting shells.  Bring your own sewing machine\, serger if desired\, basic sewing and cutting tools\, patterns\, fabric\, thread and notions for your projects.  We will also have Fit for Art’s patterns\, tools and select fabrics (including solid rayon/spandex knits for painting) available for purchase. \nLocation: Maritime Conference Center in Linthicum Maryland (right by the Baltimore Washington International Airport). DESCRIPTION:The Baltimore Chapter of the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals is pleased to sponsor a trunk show and one day workshop with sewing expert and instructor Mary Ray.  In addition to teaching apparel design and construction\, Mary is a frequent contributor to Threads Magazine.  Look up her recent articles in Threads Magazine on making scrap lace to incorporate into a garment (issue #169) and on boro style stitching (issue #191). \nEnjoy Mary’s Trunk Show featuring a selection of garments and accessories that inspire and teach about fabric\, design\, embellishment\, and technique including award-winning pieces\, garments that have appeared in Threads Magazine\, and current projects using sustainable techniques. As she shows her work\, she relates stories of her creative life and travels along the way.  Free for ASDP members\, fee for non-members.  Friday\, March 15th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. \nOn Saturday\, join the full day Scrap Lace Workshop.  What do you do with fabric scraps that are too small to use and too precious to throw away? Sew them together and make a new piece of fabric. In this workshop you will experiment with fabric\, thread\, and stitch combinations that can be used for small sections of a garment like a yoke or sleeves and learn how to use the technique to create large pieces. It’s a creative way to make your garments one-of-a-kind. Additionally\, this technique can expand an amount of fabric that’s not quite enough for the project you want to make.
