SUMMARY:Enchanting France - Embellishing Fabric 2024
DESCRIPTION:Spend a week in July with Rae Cumbie* and Carrie Emerson** of Fit for Art Patterns at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort\, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France\, exploring the countryside and a variety of fabric embellishing and surface design techniques. \n\n\n\nWelcome to La Cascade!\n\n\n\nThe mornings will be spent in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home. We will paint\, stitch\, collage and piece a variety of small fabric samples to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Stitchers of all skill levels and interests are welcome. \n\n\n\nCreatives at work in the  studio.\n\n\n\nAfternoons will be spent exploring the surrounding countryside including the flower fields\, regional markets\, tree lined thoroughfares\, and small villages. Our tour guide will be Anna Cumbie\, Rae’s bilingual daughter who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher.  She will assist us in masterfully managing our new surroundings and will lead us to some fun spots for an authentic French Adventure. \n\n\n\nAnna probing a pastel dye vat.\n\n\n\nLocal textile activities will include touring a museum with contemporary tapestries\, visits with local artisans and collectors\, a day pastel dyeing with an expert in the field\, and time to shop at a local fabric store. \n\n\n\n\nLearning about pastel dyeing from Denise.\n\n\n\nAnd the fruits of our labors!\n\n\n\n\nWe will find inspiration in the ironwork details\, copper works\, blue pastel fabrics and notions\, bountiful outdoor markets\, museum exhibits\, and fabric and trim stores in neighboring Revel and environs. \n\n\n\n\nFabric shopping in Revel\n\n\n\nPeaches were lovely at the Revel market \n\n\n\nTouring the Dom Robert museum.\n\n\n\n\nAs we move through the week’s creative experiences and beautiful adventures\, your work in the studio will come to life. You will be encouraged to move your samples forward with several options depending on your interest and abilities: \n\n\n\n\nScrap lace in progress.\n\n\n\nMemories of La Cascade Tote Bag.\n\n\n\nFabric collage memento.\n\n\n\n\n\nCombine your samples into an inspired technique book or book cover.\n\n\n\nCreate a functional tote that will include your work.\n\n\n\nCraft the samples into a wall hanging or table runner.\n\n\n\nPlan and craft samples to be included in an embellished garment.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMeals will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream. \n\n\n\n\nOur host and chef\, Nese.\n\n\n\nTable set for dinner on the patio.\n\n\n\n\nIncluded accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. A limited number of single rooms are available for an additional fee of $800.  We’ll travel in shared rental cars from the Toulouse airport to La Cascade and environs. \n\n\n\nThe retreat fee of $3150 includes most materials\, room\, board\, field trips and priceless experiences.  Class size is limited to 9. The nonrefundable registration fee is $650.
