SUMMARY:Enchanting France - Embellishing Fabric 2024
DESCRIPTION:Spend a week in July with Rae Cumbie* and Carrie Emerson** of Fit for Art Patterns at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort\, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France\, exploring the countryside and a variety of fabric embellishing and surface design techniques. \n\n\n\nWelcome to La Cascade!\n\n\n\nThe mornings will be spent in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home. We will paint\, stitch\, collage and piece a variety of small fabric samples to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Stitchers of all skill levels and interests are welcome. \n\n\n\nCreatives at work in the  studio.\n\n\n\nAfternoons will be spent exploring the surrounding countryside including the flower fields\, regional markets\, tree lined thoroughfares\, and small villages. Our tour guide will be Anna Cumbie\, Rae’s bilingual daughter who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher.  She will assist us in masterfully managing our new surroundings and will lead us to some fun spots for an authentic French Adventure. \n\n\n\nAnna probing a pastel dye vat.\n\n\n\nLocal textile activities will include touring a museum with contemporary tapestries\, visits with local artisans and collectors\, a day pastel dyeing with an expert in the field\, and time to shop at a local fabric store. \n\n\n\n\nLearning about pastel dyeing from Denise.\n\n\n\nAnd the fruits of our labors!\n\n\n\n\nWe will find inspiration in the ironwork details\, copper works\, blue pastel fabrics and notions\, bountiful outdoor markets\, museum exhibits\, and fabric and trim stores in neighboring Revel and environs. \n\n\n\n\nFabric shopping in Revel\n\n\n\nPeaches were lovely at the Revel market \n\n\n\nTouring the Dom Robert museum.\n\n\n\n\nAs we move through the week’s creative experiences and beautiful adventures\, your work in the studio will come to life. You will be encouraged to move your samples forward with several options depending on your interest and abilities: \n\n\n\n\nScrap lace in progress.\n\n\n\nMemories of La Cascade Tote Bag.\n\n\n\nFabric collage memento.\n\n\n\n\n\nCombine your samples into an inspired technique book or book cover.\n\n\n\nCreate a functional tote that will include your work.\n\n\n\nCraft the samples into a wall hanging or table runner.\n\n\n\nPlan and craft samples to be included in an embellished garment.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMeals will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream. \n\n\n\n\nOur host and chef\, Nese.\n\n\n\nTable set for dinner on the patio.\n\n\n\n\nIncluded accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. A limited number of single rooms are available for an additional fee of $800.  We’ll travel in shared rental cars from the Toulouse airport to La Cascade and environs. \n\n\n\nThe retreat fee of $3150 includes most materials\, room\, board\, field trips and priceless experiences.  Class size is limited to 9. The nonrefundable registration fee is $650. DESCRIPTION:Expand your wardrobe with a variety of well fitting knit Tees and Tunics over two inspiring days of stitching at Artistic Artifacts in Alexandria VA using the Tabula Rasa Knit Tee & Tunic pattern (purchase required for class). After a trunk show of knit possibilities\, students will be guided to choose the appropriate size and pattern pieces\, cut their knit fabric\, sew flexible seams\, and smoothly finish the necklines and hems. The second day will allow for more sewing and an exploration of finishing techniques to add variety to your knit wardrobe. If you have already taken Fit for Art’s basic knit class\, enjoy spending these two days working on knit variations\, adding collars\, cuffs\, embellishments and cross over styles to your knits (see all Fit for Art pattern variations). DESCRIPTION:The Baltimore Chapter of the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals is pleased to sponsor a trunk show and one day workshop with sewing expert and instructor Mary Ray.  In addition to teaching apparel design and construction\, Mary is a frequent contributor to Threads Magazine.  Look up her recent articles in Threads Magazine on making scrap lace to incorporate into a garment (issue #169) and on boro style stitching (issue #191). \nEnjoy Mary’s Trunk Show featuring a selection of garments and accessories that inspire and teach about fabric\, design\, embellishment\, and technique including award-winning pieces\, garments that have appeared in Threads Magazine\, and current projects using sustainable techniques. As she shows her work\, she relates stories of her creative life and travels along the way.  Free for ASDP members\, fee for non-members.  Friday\, March 15th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. \nOn Saturday\, join the full day Scrap Lace Workshop.  What do you do with fabric scraps that are too small to use and too precious to throw away? Sew them together and make a new piece of fabric. In this workshop you will experiment with fabric\, thread\, and stitch combinations that can be used for small sections of a garment like a yoke or sleeves and learn how to use the technique to create large pieces. It’s a creative way to make your garments one-of-a-kind. Additionally\, this technique can expand an amount of fabric that’s not quite enough for the project you want to make.
