Me Made May

“Me Made May” is an 8-year-old garment challenge that encourages participants to wear more of their self-made creations.

I took the challenge last year to wear at least one self-made garment every day in May.  I signed up on the MMM blog and expanded the suggested challenge, pledging to create one new garment using stash fabric each week.  I was really looking forward to infusing my everyday wardrobe with 4 fun new tops.

Here is one of last year’s new tops.

Like many participants, I took a photo every day and posted it on Instagram.  I found this a little uncomfortable at first.  I don’t usually like photos of myself, but by the end of the month, I began to see the process as self-informative.  Some of my least favorite garments moved up my garment go-to list because they looked great in the photo.  I also dug out some old faithfuls in the back of the closet and found pleasure wearing them again.

An old favorite I wore and enjoyed, even the worn out jeans were old faithfuls.

Other bloggers and sewists who have taken the challenge said that they realized they had lots of dresses or tops but no bottoms, prompting their development of a pants or skirt pattern to round out their handstitched wardrobe.

What is a good challenge for your Me Made May wardrobe?   Go to founder Zo’s BlogSpot to read more about the challenge and see what others are doing.  Then make a reasonable challenge for yourself based on your wardrobe and May schedule.

Because my May is busy with projects for client weddings and magazine deadlines, I am going to pledge to wear at least one self-made garment each day and make at least two new stash based garments to freshen up my summer wardrobe.  For my stash projects, I am eyeing 2 Liberty of London lawn prints that want to be a Tabula Rasa Jacket with the narrow band finish from the Bands and Pockets Variations and 3 coordinating knits for testing our new Tabula Rasa Knit variation.

Love these fabrics!

Carrie is going to be traveling in France much of May so we can look forward to her occasional posts in her Me Made May garments in the fun places she is visiting.

So, hop on the Me Made May bandwagon and share your creations with the world!  It also got me talking about my sewing more last May with neighbors and friends when I had to ask them to snap my photo.  It was fun to celebrate the fruits of my sewing labors all month.  Post your photos on your own social media spot and include your web address as a comment to this post.  Or post on Instagram  using the hashtags #fitforartpatterns, #tabularasajackets, #tabularasaknits, #eurekapants or send us photos at info@fitforartpatterns.com for our Facebook page so our community can be inspired by your self-made wardrobe.

By the end of the month I was very relaxed for a photo in my V neck TRK Tee.

Happy Sewing! RAE

  1. I’ve participated almost every year. I was thinking of skipping it this year but you’ve inspired me. I may post only to my blog: http://nowsewing.blogspot.com/. Or maybe I’ll try to post to your instagram spot. Thanks for all the inspiration!

    1. Thanks Martha. We’ll look forward to seeing your MMM photos – on your media and ours!
